Howzit to all 42 new readers who've joined this week! Hope you're having a great weekend As a young photographer learning the craft of photography, I was under the impression that good technique and the best equipment possible were two non-negotiables when it came to making great photos. “Photography has no rules, it is not a sport. It is the result which counts, no matter how it is achieved.” – Bill Brandt Coincidentally, one of Bill Brandt's portraits was an image that kickstarted a mind shift in me. Look at this. I don't know how true that was, but it was, once again, a challenge to the status quo in my mind that said all equipment had to be perfect. Bill is right. Photography isn't a sport, and there are no defined rules that we all need to follow. That flexibility in my approach has helped me enjoy photography more over the decades. 2025 Photo EventsBeing exposed to a wider world of photography and the thoughts of other photographers really helped me find the process of creating images much more rewarding Join me in Vienna this March or Boston in May for an immersive weekend of shooting, learning, and connecting with fellow creatives. Howzit! When I first began photography, portraits were the one thing I wanted to avoid. I didn’t like being in photographs myself, and the thought of having to talk to someone while I took their picture filled me with dread. I was shy, quiet, and preferred to keep to myself. At photo school, though, there was no escaping it. Assignments came, and some of them were portrait assignments. The problem was—I always stuck to photographing people I already knew. That way, I didn’t have to face my...

The light is great, but the spark of inspiration just wasn't there. It’s a feeling I know many of you share—the pressure to always be creating, to have a unique vision for every scene, can be exhausting. It got me thinking about the nature of creative ruts. The Main Frame: Recently, a member of the TPE Tribe...
Howzit to all 65 new readers who joined us this week—awesome to have you here!I was freeing up space on my iPhone the other day when something struck me. My phone said I had 8,247 photos from the past year. Eight thousand, two hundred and forty-seven moments I thought were worth preserving. Then I reviewed what I'd actually shared—in newsletters, on the TPE Tribe, and in videos. Maybe twenty thirty odd. What happened with the rest? What lives in that massive gap between what we capture and...
