Howzit to all 35 new readers who've joined this week! I used to think that all famous photographers were supremely confident about their images. Photographer Of The WeekSally Mann Sally Mann is an American photographer known for her large-format black-and-white photographs of people and places in her immediate surroundings, including her children, husband, and rural landscapes, as well as self-portraits. My first introduction to Sally Mann's photography was a photo called 'Candy Cigarette'. It was, if I recall, in a book I had at photo school. At the time, I didn't really give it much thought beyond it looking 'kinda neat.' If people are aware of Sally Mann, it's often through the lens of controversy as one of her books - 'Immediate Family' featured images of her family in the nude. Controversy that has raised it's head once again in Texas However, her work is much broader than just those images, and I find looking at her landscapes of The South especially relaxing. The use of large format cameras, alternative processes, and her wonderful ability to evoke a mood in her images is awesome. Weekly Challenge For this week, as we've been looking at Sally Mann, I'd love to see black-and-white images of 'family' or landscapes. “The camera sees more than the eye, so why not make use of it?” – Edward Weston The Photograph I Wish I’d Taken Last week, while putting together the Friday roundup of my favourite photographs from the TPE tribe, one image stopped me in my tracks. It made me wish—deeply—that I’d been the one to take it. Mark Scheuern There are certain subjects I’ve always felt drawn to, and two of them are urban environments and industrial frameworks. So when I saw this photograph by Mark, it hit me hard....
I hope you’re all having a brilliant weekend, with some time to chase the light and capture what speaks to you. This week, I’ve been reflecting on how photography evolves—not just through practice or gear, but through meaningful conversations. There’s something powerful about talking directly with someone who can guide you to see your work with fresh eyes. It’s personal, focused, and can shift your perspective in ways that spark real growth. The Power of a Mentor’s Guidance When I moved back...
There are no accidental masterpieces in painting, but there are accidental masterpieces in photography. – Chuck Close Embrace The Chaos Howzit all! I hope you’ve been having a great week. Earlier today, I recorded a video about the images submitted for the Focus and Feeling assignments last week, and one photograph truly made me think. The photographer had been experimenting with a relatively simple idea — and it reminded me of something important. Lately, a few people in the TPE Tribe have...
